Hampton Sides, author of In the Kingdom of The Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, came to Bowdoin Oct. 7, 2015, to discuss the research and travel he undertook when preparing to write the story of the ill-fated Jeannette Expedition.

The expedition began in 1879 under the command of George Washington DeLong; the vessel was trapped in the ice near Wrangel Island, where it remained for two years before the crew had to abandon ship. Thirty-three men set out in three boats towards the Lena Delta in Siberia, but only thirteen survived.

The event was sponsored by the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, the Maritime Heritage Program, and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, NOAA.
